San Francisco, 1872. Susannah Carterton yearns to be accepted as a serious artist. But when an estranged friend is found murdered and she stands accused, the panicked painter swallows her pride to ask help of the man who loathes her in kind.
Jack Cabot is ecstatic to have his youngest relative back home. Determined to be all that she needs, the likable reprobate could do without her striking shrew of an aunt. But when the beautiful busybody desperately requires his aid, he jumps into action to shore up her defense.
Grappling with the idea of someone setting her up for jail time, Susannah fears her chance at winning a prestigious exhibition is about to end in a shocking society scandal. Great book!
This is the second book in the home at last series, Susannah’s Secret. It is an intriguing story filled with drama, secrets, betrayals, murder and a slow steamy romance. The characters are well written, and the plot moves calmly along. When Suzannah is accused of murder, she wearily turns to an unlikely rogue. Suspiciously, she holds her “ideas” close to her chest, as the police come closer to finding even more evidence against her. Jack, her adopted niece’s uncle, becomes her biggest supporter than she originally assumed, by using his connections to help solve the murder. An amazing story, and a plot that keeps you entertained all the way to the end with its twist and turns. Clever plot building, even as it has scenes outlining the murder investigation, it also provides scenes happening days up to the murder.
I received a complimentary ARC, but I am voluntarily offering my personal review.
