Four years after they had separated, Alix found herself forced to be once again in the constant and abrasive company of her husband Kirby, on his vast sugar plantation in Northern Queensland. She was there to convalesce, not with any idea of reconciliation which was just as well, she realised, when it became increasingly obvious that Kirby was as heavily involved now with the original cause of the trouble, Melanie Gordon, as he had ever been.
