Engaging read of older Japanese culture
The collection of stories and information presented provide a portrait of Japanese culture. As a Western reader, this book helped highlight some of the differences in mindset existing between myself and that culture. For instance, the importance of honor was paramount. So much so, that you may be honor bound to kill someone else, even though you know it’ll cost your own life.
Also, don’t skip the appendices at the end. Though pedantic in parts, they help flesh out the matters of ceremony, which especially the chapter on seppuku, changed and furthered my understanding of those matters.
This ebook edition has minimal mistakes and has helpfully linked footnotes.
