Tales of the Trail: An Entertaining and Educational Guide to Using Llamas in the Backcountry is a compilation of true (albeit slightly embellished) stories about backcountry llama packing written by Charlie Hackbarth, the president of Mt. Sopris Llamas. In addition to being an entertaining read, Tales of the Trail is an excellent guide to llama packing; Hackbarth covers everything from buying and training a new llama to what to expect in the backcountry. From trekking through Colorado's Big Blue Wilderness (now the Uncompahgre Wilderness) to manning the Hope Pass aid station for the Leadville 100 race, Hackbarth reveals his well-developed sense of humor as well as the respect and admiration he has for his animals.
