Publisher Description
There is a moment every morning when the countryside takes a pause. The birds stop singing, the dogs choke back their barks, and cats pause mid-stride. Everything waits. It's in this vacuum that a man working alone has the best chance of finding truffles...
The plot of land was perfect, just what they'd been looking for, offering expansive views across the valley and within walking distance of the local village. There was only one small problem, there was no house. And yet the land was affordable and came, the agent promised, with a possible income from a copse of truffle oaks. Just after the birth of their first daughter, after leaving the London rat race behind, here was a chance for Jamie and his wife to finally realize their dream of owning a property.
With one final salivating glance at the oak trees the decision was made. All they needed now was a dog. And their quest to find and train a truffle dog turns out to be as full of hidden discoveries as a truffle hunt itself.
With delicious humor and superb storytelling, Ten Trees and a Truffle Dog is sure to delight anyone who loves dogs, food, and rural France.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
In his fourth travel memoir on France (Extremely Pale Ros , etc.), Ivey paints a romantic portrait of the simple pleasures of Provence. With soaring prose, the author takes the reader on a journey through both major life changes and seemingly simple events, with the South of France as backdrop. From the birth of his daughter, to the acquisition of property and the striking up of friendship with a new truffle-hunting dog, Ivey elicits on the part of the reader an appetite for more of the small French province, known for its wines and cuisine. Sparked by his love of wine and need to escape the wired life of London, Ivey makes the trip to France to start a new adventure. Having lived in Provence as a permanent "foreigner," Ivey is pleasantly surprised when a seemingly perfect plot of land comes up for grabs. What makes it so special is the abundance of truffles there. Written with a clear love for the Provencial lifestyle, this book is perfect for those interested in the South of France.

Interesting twist on travel memoir
First, the book is well written. It’s entertaining, has a unique perspective in the fact that the family is young and decides to buy and build a house on a property in rural France that may have truffles. Part of the economic factors with the purchase is the potential for finding these truffles with the help of a specially trained dog. The training and hunt for truffles is the twist.
