Terry Winters
Publisher Description
Featuring twenty-one new paintings, all illustrated in full color, this catalogue highlights Winters's unique layering of visual information and his signature use of pigment. The artworks' imagery derives from diverse sources, among them botany, astronomy, and chemistry, as indicated by their titles, which include Bloom, Nebula, and Dioxazine Shift. Each finished painting, however, is an abstract composition with its own internal dynamics, emerging through a process that resembles evolution and other unpredictable natural phenomena. As Winters explains in the accompanying interview, “The process is pushed and pulled until there’s an image — a material presence and an optical likeness. I see them now as compound pictorial objects, but I want the painting process to be direct and diagrammatic — straightforward and factual gestures that open a wider imaginative territory.”
