The first in a series of novellas offering a deeper look at the world of the Baine Chronicles.
Life as a shifter-mage hybrid has always been tough for Sunaya Baine. Ostracized from her clan and forced to hide her forbidden abilities, she’s never fit in. So when she’s offered a position at the Enforcers Guild, Solantha’s crime-fighting organization, she jumps at the chance to prove her worth.
But when Sunaya swaggers onto her first day at the job, the last thing she expects it to be partnered up with a spoiled rich girl. Annia is a Lone Wolf enforcer--one who doesn’t play well with others. The two of them will have to play ball though, because a little girl has gone missingm, and if they don’t find her soon, she might just fall pray to Solantha’s dak underbelly of magic and crime.
Never having been a big fan of novellas, I went ahead and bought this prequel to the Baine Chronicles as I really enjoy them. What a great glimpse of Sunaya’s beginnings! I loved how she isn’t quite as self-assured as she is now and a little more hot-headed, as most people are different when they are younger. The novella also shows us how some of the main characters in the series met Sunaya and became a part of her circle of friends. I think this gives all of them a little more depth and helps to understand them a little bit more. The story was great, as well, and is well-written as all of Ms. Walt’s books generally are. The end really surprised me, making me both sad and happy with the way things turned out. How can I be both? You’ll have to read the novella to find out! I am really looking forward to more novellas to see the origins of the friendships that came to be. If you are a fan of the series, you really need to pick this up because, as I already said, I believe this novella adds a tiny bit more depth the characters in it. If you haven’t tried the series yet, now is a good time. Highly recommend!
