Thalaba the Destroyer

In this epic poem by Robert Southey, an early reference to a vampire appears. Thalaba, the protagonist, encounters a woman named Oneiza and falls in love, only for her to die shortly before their marriage. Thalaba is soon after haunted by a spirit that claims to be the ghost of Oneiza, but is identified as a vampire.
