#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
Everything starts somewhere. For elite military cop Jack Reacher, that somewhere was Carter Crossing, Mississippi, way back in 1997.
A lonely railroad track. A crime scene. A cover-up. A young woman is dead, and solid evidence points to a soldier at a nearby military base. But that soldier has powerful friends in Washington.
Reacher is ordered undercover to find out everything he can and then to vanish. But when he gets to Carter Crossing, Reacher meets local sheriff Elizabeth Deveraux, who has a thirst for justice and an appetite for secrets. Uncertain they can trust each other, they reluctantly join forces. Finding unexpected layers to the case, Reacher works to uncover the truth, while others try to bury it forever. The conspiracy threatens to shatter his faith in his mission—and turn him into a man to be feared.
Don’t miss Lee Child’s short story “Second Son” and a sneak peek of his new novel, A Wanted Man, in the back of the book.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Unlike previous Jack Reacher novels, The Affair isn’t concerned with rising body counts so much as keeping the story’s investigative intrigue at a deliciously drawn-out simmer. Set in a secretive army base in backwoods Mississippi, the first flashback installment in Lee Child’s juggernaut crime series is an excellent entry point for newcomers, as Reacher describes how he made the unlikely leap from highly decorated military policeman to disheveled drifter meting out savage justice. Amidst more plot twists and turns than a country road, Child delivers some of the series’ most sexually charged scenes—as well as the backstory on Reacher’s trademark fold-up toothbrush.

The Prequel
This should have been the first book written but here we are. We finally get to hear why Reacher is the way he is. As always, too much description of stuff but thank goodness it is written in the First Person. When Child writes as Reacher in the Third Person it is way worse. Oh well, on to the next one.
Great book
Reacher's background story. Great read as usual. Read it!
Another Extraordinary Story
Any of Child's novels are excellent reads, but this has too be one of the very best plotted. The setting and the vintage details serve to create a most realistic background for this "prequel" to the other Reacher books.
One of the best iBooks pre-order decisions I ever made.
