The Alternate

Dyeridium is a chemical that’s in the genetic make up of each person on the planet, and it’s specific to that one person be that one person’s soulmate…the chemical lies dormant in your brain until you meet. It only becomes active and releases in your body when you lock eyes for the first time.

None of this was supposed to happen.

Mae Thompson was supposed to meet the man of her dreams, have two eyes that finally matched in color, and live a normal life. Instead, tragedy struck and she was left with one eye drained to a steel grey color signifying the loss of the soulmate she hadn’t even met yet.

Now, destined for the Line Up where she will be chosen as an Alternate by one of the city’s Elders, Mae finds herself in a nightmare as part of a line up that isn’t as innocent as it seems. She’s been taken against her will and is desperate for a chance to escape. But when the moment comes, the choice proves to be more difficult than anticipated, when taking her freedom would mean leaving the others behind.
