Ady is an intelligent young girl growing up with her mother, Sanite, in 1862 New Orleans, where they’re both enslaved. We were utterly compelled by the coming-of-age tale that takes up the first half of this book, full of heart-wrenching lessons that Ady takes into her teens when she bravely joins an underground Black resistance movement called the Daughters. Throughout Ady’s often perilous journey, author Maurice Carlos Ruffin gives us insights into seldom-explored aspects of slavery, like the contrast between the physical torture of forced-labor camps and the isolation of city life. Ady is raised by her mother, Sanite, who came of age in a runaway settlement deep in the forests and swamps of Louisiana and teaches Ady basic survival skills such as hunting, planting, and foraging healing herbs. A story I didn’t know about the group of black women living in antebellum New Orleans and their struggles to live, and to sabotage in many ways the rule of their white slavers.. I liked it very much
Beautifully Done!!
This is a new to me author, but I will definitely be looking for more of his works. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story especially because it blends fact and fiction, which I love. I would recommend this to anybody who loves to read historical fiction. I can’t wait to see what more this author will bring us.
