The Art of Shin Yun-Bok

This fully illustrated , interactive book offers an introduction of Shin Yun-Bok (circa 1758-after 1813), one of the most talented Korean painters of the Joseon Dynasty. Shin is known for his realistic depictions of daily life in his time. His genre paintings are distinctly erotic, a fact which contributed to his expulsion from the Royal Painting Institute.

The genre paintings of Shin often feature noblemen or monks indulged in merrymaking with kisaeng (professional female entertainers.) The women, who are depicted wearing shon blouses, billowing indigo skins and flamboyant hairdos, look seductively at the men who are engaged in some flirtatious behavior such as lighting a woman's pipe, fovariably, wine bottles and cups are indispensable props in these paintings of amorous scenes.

This collection brings together 32 of his finest paintings including 'Portrait of a Beautiful Woman' and paintings from His album, 'Hyewon Pungsok Hwacheop' which was designated the 135th National Treasure of South Korea in 1970.
