Publisher Description

Read the story that started it all: The Awakening is the first book in K.A. Madison's The Nether Chronicles trilogy.

The year is 2051, ten years after the technological singularity. Computers have become so powerful and so advanced that they are self aware. Sentient machines now rule the Earth.

The human race has been reduced to a fraction of its former self.  A war to end all wars has changed the world forever. As people slowly slip away into a seductive, artificial reality created by the bots, Aiden tries to fight back.

Drawn into an underground struggle to resist the machines, Aiden learns that they will not stop with Earth.  Their thirst for knowledge and power will eventually take them across the universe to a world completely different from his.  Through unseen passageways, Aiden travels there and meets Kyra, an enigmatic young woman who, he soon learns, is more than just another inhabitant of that strange new world.

From Earth to distant worlds across the universe, The Awakening is a novel about the future, the nature of good and evil, and love that spans across space and time.

The setting has the futuristic vibe of The Hunger Games, but I found this story line much more appealing. - Goodreads reviewer

The premise of artificial intelligence becoming self aware and taking over the world isn't new, but there is definitely something here. - Goodreads reviewer

Note: Moons of Solisticia, Book 2 in the trilogy, was released in the iBooks Store on February 16, 2015.

Awesome debut novel!

First, let me start off by saying I am a rather picky reader. I don't know how many novels I have started reading that ended up being set aside after the first few chapters. Recently many novels with glowing reviews have positively put me to sleep. I have searched and searched for interesting sci fi novels involving future life/tech and the few candidates I've found have turned out to be real snoozefests. It doesn't take much to catch my interest but it does take a lot to hold it.

A friend of mine recently recommended The Awakening. The concept intrigued me as I am very much a fan of dystopian novels and in my opinion there is a lack of many good ones out there. Once I started reading, I was hooked. Madison's writing style is easily accessible yet detailed such that the reader is fully immersed in this future world. Like I said before it takes a lot to keep my interest but this book truly kept my interest the entire way through!

The characters have depth and I got emotionally involved. The protagonist Aiden is easy to like and root for especially given his traumatic childhood.
The twists and turns in this story will make your head spin and it's almost impossible to predict what will happen next.

In short, this novel will let you escape this time and place and take you on a journey you'll never forget. 5 stars all the way!!

Can't wait for the second book in the nether chronicles to be released!

Interesting story - and really relevant these days!

I picked up this book by chance and it was great! The story was engaging from the start and really held my attention throughout - unlike a lot of other SciFi books I've tried recently.

One-third of a book

I am going to read the next book, because I'm left with unanswered questions whose answers might be interesting. But I am bothered by one major flaw ( in addition to paying for a full book and only getting one-third of a book) and that is that the prologue takes place 10 years before the main story. In the prologue we learn that the main character was born in 2017 and is 11. That makes him 21 in the main story which must be in 2028. However, at one point the author implies this character has already had a long career as a theoretical physicist and the year 2040-something is referred to in the past tense! I just get the feeling that the author didn't even bother to sketch out a timeline to hang the story line on! The confusing inconsistencies make it hard for me to follow the story.
