England, 845 AD: Heregar, the son of Herewulf, lives the privileged life of a Thane on his lands in Somerset. One day, however, he is arrested and accused of conspiring to murder the king. The accusations are a lie, and Heregar expects to be exonerated by his neighbors. But when he learns that the chief accuser is his neighbor Thane Matelgar, whose daughter Alswythe he loves, all hope of acquittal is lost. In court he is declared an outlaw and exiled. His only chance of survival is to escape. When he encounters Danish Vikings, he faces a difficult choice between revenge and loyalty to his people, especially to the traitor Matelgar, who turned against him. What will be his choice?

This is the fifth book in the eight-volume series "IN DARK AGES“ by Charles W. Whistler. It contains detailed notes on the text and general explanations of the Viking Age in an additional essay. It is also decorated with some atmospheric illustrations and features a map of England in Viking times.

The Author

In addition to his medical education, Charles W. Whistler developed an intense interest in the history of England of the period before the Norman conquest. This is reflected today in his prolific work as an author of historical novels. His passionate preoccupation with historical facts and Nordic myths has given rise to the eight volumes that are now available as the great medieval Viking series "IN DARK AGES“.
