The Battle of Hastings (1066‪)‬

The Battle of Hastings – 14 October 1066 – represents a crucial turning point in the history of Medieval Europe. The Norman Duke, William, trounced his Anglo-Saxon adversaries who had been loath to recognise a foreigner as King despite the promise made by their own dead sovereign, Edward the Confessor. A just war and a thirst for power were one and the same thing in the intentions and choices made in those days by both commanders and soldiers. And, from Rome, a flag was sent in support of one side.

From that day onwards, England became once again the focus of European interests, and a kingdom destined to rule lands and sea was born under a King who was both a subject and equal of the King of France. This was a battle that served as a prelude to many more over the centuries to come.
