Publisher Description

The hotly anticipated sequel to The Silverblood Promise continues the incredible new epic fantasy series perfect for fans of Scott Lynch.

Winter has come early to Korslakov, City of Spires, and Lukan Gardova has arrived with it. Most visitors to this famous city of artifice seek technological marvels, or alchemical ingenuity. Lukan only desires the unknown legacy his father has left for him, in the vaults of the Blackfire Bank.

But when Lukan's key to the vault is stolen by a mysterious thief known as the Rook, he and his friends race to win it back—and find themselves trapped in a web of murder and deceit. In desperation, Lukan requests the help of Lady Marni Volkova, scion of Korslakov's most powerful family.

Yet Lady Marni has secrets of her own. Worse, she has plans for Lukan and his friends. Plans that involve a journey into Korslakov's dark past, in search of a long-lost alchemical formula that could lead to the city's greatest discovery . . . or its destruction.

"A fast-paced carnival of setbacks and skullduggery that reminds me of... me! Charming from the first twist to the last."—Scott Lynch on The Silverblood Promise

A mixed review

This is probably the most torn I’ve been about a review all year. I want to start with what I liked. The story is incredible. This is a great sort of heist adventure that leads to (MUCH) bigger things and I like the tease in the beginning and middle of the book that leads to it’s epic conclusion. The secondary characters are also terrific and well fleshed out. I think my favorite is actually the old general. I loved his backstory and his part in the end was appropriate and satisfying in my opinion. Ashra continues to be an anchor of reason and skill. Flea-I would normally be irritated at this character but Logan writes her so well (I wish this was how Lift had been written in the Stormlight Archive) that while slightly irritating at times is a lovable character that you root for and hope she doesn’t get into too much trouble for her or the rest of the group. The world created in this series is also fascinating in an old world but still fantastical setting and I do enjoy all the little political nuggets we get throughout.
Now the part I didn’t care for…the main character. I was so torn on if this book would get a lesser rating because of this character. Lukan unfortunately for me has become sort of a typical character of the last 10-15 years in books-a drunkard who only seems to care about spending his days getting drunk and gambling, thinks every “joke” that comes out is funny or clever and offers no real redeemable trait. Yes he does show courage from time to time but there just seems to be no anchor, nothing to bring me back that makes me want to root for this character and I’ve just seen it too many times (frankly, I’m over this stereotypical character in fiction). Had this character been less loathsome to read this would’ve been an easy 5 stars and a contender for book of the year for me but I just don’t care for this style and hope in future installments we get more growth.
