Publisher Description

WINNER OF THE BOOKER PRIZE • The bestselling author of The Handmaid's Tale and The Testaments weaves together strands of gothic suspense, romance, and science fiction into one utterly spellbinding narrative, beginning with the mysterious death of a young woman named Laura Chase in 1945.

Decades later, Laura’s sister Iris recounts her memories of their childhood, and of the dramatic deaths that have punctuated their wealthy, eccentric family’s history. Intertwined with Iris’s account are chapters from the scandalous novel that made Laura famous, in which two illicit lovers amuse each other by spinning a tale of a blind killer on a distant planet.

These richly layered stories-within-stories gradually illuminate the secrets that have long haunted the Chase family, coming together in a brilliant and astonishing final twist.

Wow in a good way

Enormity of the plot is not obvious until the end, at which point, you will re-read parts and see the intelligently-placed subtle and direct clues which are sometimes a single word

A Tour de Force of the 20th Century

Buckle yourself in before reading this one. Alternate storylines, flashbacks, reality vs. unreality, manipulation, human folly and more. Sometimes I think Marg comes from another planet, but no, she's just a great writer from Canada.

Couldn’t

Enjoyed Atwood’s other books, couldn’t get into this one
