Publisher Description

As Fyodor Karamazov awaits an amorous encounter, he is violently done to death. The three sons of the old debauchee are forced to confront their own guilt or complicity. Who will own to parricide? The reckless and passionate Dmitri? The corrosive intellectual Ivan? Surely not the chaste novice monk Alyosha? The search reveals the divisions which rack the brothers, yet paradoxically unite them.

Still the best

I just finished my third reading of this great novel, and am again overwhelmed by it. Simply the best. This free edition is sturdy enough, using the old Constance Garnett translation. Read it. You won't regret it.

I don't have the vocabulary, even after reading this book.

I have read most all of the novels of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Krylov, and even Pushkin, and I have never been disappointed. This is another example of how literature is supposed to be. These pages are filled with intensity, elegance, idealism, tragedy, romance, religion. I could go on for an entire paragraph using only single words of praise. I highly recommend this novel to anyone, everyone. It is long, it is slow, it has some of the most difficult sections that are available to read in classic literature, but it is so worth the time. Enjoy.

Must read!!

The main complaint I saw about this book was that the philosophical sections were long and tedious but I could not get enough of them. Amazing. Ivan’s chat with the devil got me the closest I’ve ever been to an existential crisis.
