One of the many great traditions of YMCA Camp Fitch is the endurance of group singing as an intrinsic part of the camp experience. Campers and staff sing around campfires, during village cheers at lunchtime and at camp chapel services. Group chorales have been a standard at camp talent programs. It’s not even unusual to hear singing coming out of the camp kitchens.
While the tradition remains, the songs have changed significantly since Camp Fitch’s founding 98 years ago. In addition to the classics, the Camp Fitch repertoire has (at one time or another) included 17th century folk tunes, Negro spirituals, World War I fight anthems, Yiddish parody songs and the modern pop hits of the in-house band, “N. Fitch.”
Vintage Publications of Camp Fitch has digitized Camp Fitch’s official songbooks help preserve and promote this musical tradition. We also hope to re-introduce (or at least re-acknowledge) some of the songs that are no longer used at the campfire.
