At the Tabard Inn in Southwark, a jovial group of pilgrims assembles, including an unscrupulous Pardoner, a noble-minded Knight, a ribald Miller, the lusty Wife of Bath, and Chaucer himself. As they set out on their journey towards the shrine of Thomas a Becket in Canterbury, each character agrees to tell a tale. Great Resource
If you really want to read the Canterbury Tales in Middle English, and would like a thorough literary analysis of the text, as well as helpful foot notes to guide you through the reading, this version is for you. Neville Coghill's translation is better if you do not want to have to translate the Middle English yourself, but it basically cuts out Chaucer's Tale of Melibee and the Parson's Tale. If translation concerns you, there is a very helpful dictionary of Middle English words appended to the text. This is extremely helpful. As far as the introduction goes, this version is a significant degree more thorough, expounding upon the legacy of the Canterbury Tales, while the other version focuses more on a biographical sketch of Chaucer's life. To substantiate for its lack of a biography for Chaucer, this version substitutes it with a sufficiently laid out timeline of events in his life.
