The Caxtons

Pisistratus Caxton's "good management" turns a family farewell into a test of love, duty, and character. Determined to seek his fortune in Australia, he wins over first his adventurous uncle and then his cautious father, until the household's resistance gives way to a painful but hopeful consent. In the mother's sacred room, amid family memories and unspoken sacrifice, he finally confesses the restlessness and ambition he has long concealed, insisting that his departure is meant to honor and restore the Caxton name. His mother's grief becomes blessing, and his preparations begin in earnest. Around him gathers an unlikely company of emigrants: the warm-hearted but impractical Guy Bolding, whom Pisistratus tries to steady; the daring poacher Will Peterson, won over through respect and persuaded to trade crime for opportunity; and the radical Miles Square, whose fierce theories against property and society are softened by patience, kindness, and useful work. As plans unfold, Pisistratus also secures comfort for his family, encourages his father's Great Book, and restores Squills to purpose. The story closes in a mood of mortality and reflection, as Blanche's crystal-gazing, a sudden death, and a churchyard conversation turn the narrative toward sympathy, duty, and the fragile boundary between life, imagination, and hope.
