The Caxtons

Pisistratus enters Trevanion's world by accident and leaves it with his imagination forever altered. Guided by a cheerful innkeeper's tip, he takes a scenic shortcut across the estate of the influential Mr. Trevanion, only to be led by an elderly sightseer into a landscape of polished beauty, social satire, and uneasy moral judgments. The grounds seem rich, tasteful, and modern, yet the old woman's bitter nostalgia for the former Hogtons casts a shadow over every improvement. A reckless leap near the waterfall turns comic bravado into real danger, and the man who rescues him by offering a safer crossing proves to be Trevanion himself, exposing how easily appearances mislead. Later, in the Trevanion household, Pisistratus is drawn to Lady Ellinor's warmth and to Fanny's quick charm, while Trevanion's public reputation as a capable but detached statesman is complicated by glimpses of hidden melancholy and private kindness. In London, family life widens the novel's scope: books, wit, and affectionate domestic order mingle with Uncle Jack's grand reformist schemes and Uncle Roland's grave sense of duty. Beneath the comedy, old memories, political ambitions, and private sorrows begin to surface, and Pisistratus is stirred by the city's energy toward a life of purpose, work, and deeper understanding.
