Publisher Description

In 1880s Tombstone, one sprawling ranch family is about to change — one bride at a time.

Sadie Walker has run her family's Chicago bakery since she was barely tall enough to reach the counter. So when she loses her parents and the bank takes it all in a single afternoon, she loses far more than a building — she loses the only place she's ever truly belonged.

Then a letter arrives from her twin sister out west, with a strange and tender proposition: a young man in Tombstone needs a wife, quickly and quietly, to secure the loan for the restaurant he's dreamed of. It would be a marriage of convenience, nothing more. And it might be exactly the fresh start Sadie needs.

But the chef waiting at the other end of the line never asked for a bride who knows her way around an oven better than he does — and neither of them is prepared for what happens when convenience starts to feel a great deal like home.

Meanwhile, at Archer Ranch, a gruff widowed father is still grieving the wife he lost, six sisters are watching everything with opinions of their own, and the family Sadie married into holds more secrets — and more heart — than she ever expected.

The Chef is the first book in the Archer Family Ranch saga, a sweet historical romance about losing everything, marrying a stranger, and discovering the family you build along the way — for readers who love wholesome frontier romance and warm western towns.

Enjoyed story line - like gentle action so that love can grow. Food sounded great, could almost taste it.

Confused and Disappointed

I liked the idea. Several things in the book could have worked to have made a great book if written better. I spent most of the book being disappointed when another chance for conflict was passed and telling myself that an even bigger, more complex conflict would come. The main male character, Tripp, was supposed to be very stubborn and particular to his way of doing things, but he put up no fight at all when asked to change. The main female character, Sadie, was meant to have just lost her parents that she loved so much and the bakery she had worked in her whole life. The bakery her beloved parents started. Yet, she doesn't mourn the losses. It was mentioned once that she felt a little homesick and she cries with her sister once, but that's it. With Tripp having lost his parents in an accident like she had just lost hers, it was a given that that would have been something that brought them closer. I was constantly rewriting in my head and telling myself that the author was just going to save all the conflict and passion for one big, unforgettable end as it got closer and closer to the end and everything was still just a series of "I did something behind your back." followed by "I'm so glad you did that."'s. It's just not what the characters that were described would have done. A man like that with so much pride to take a loan, stubbornness to give in without a fight, passion to fall in love and not show any sign that he's anything more than a coworker? A woman that held so much love for the life she had, to lose it all and feel nothing? To be falling in love and just accept that he only sees her as a business partner? To not need to get away? To not want her life back, especially when she finds herself in love with a man that she's sure doesn't feel the same? I could spend hours rewriting, but this is all just what I felt. It's a free book and ended with a proclamation of love, so I'd say give it a try.
