Publisher Description
In this humorous cozy mystery, a PI and her talking Chihuahua probe the case of an inheritance left to dogs only to find a dead lawyer.
Aspiring PI Geri Sullivan’s new case has got her talking Chihuahua, Pepe, hot under the collar. Wealthy widow Lucille Carpenter left her entire fortune to her beloved dogs, and someone is trying to poison them. Anyone who would hurt a perro is lower than a cucaracha in Pepe’s book. But when Geri and Pepe investigate, they discover that it’s not just the coddled canines who are in danger. Now there are human targets too.
At the lavish Carpenter manor, Pepe digs for clues among the pampered pooches, bitter relatives, suspicious staff, and larcenous lawyers. But there's only one diminutive detective smart enough to save the day—and the dogs . . .
Praise for The Chihuahua Always Sniffs Twice
“Perhaps the greatest achievement of this series, written by the writing team of Waverly Fitzgerald and Curt Cobert, is just how easily the reader succumbs to the premise of an intelligent, talking dog. . . . This latest in the series continues to delight readers and dog lovers with an often outrageously feisty Chihuahua, a sympathetic and resilient heroine, and a riotous plot that is entirely original and ultimately all comes down to the value of family.” —Kings River Life Magazine

first I’ve read from this author duo, it won’t be the last.
Every now and then I want a cozy mystery that has a premise that is a bit off the beaten path – and with a talking dog – this fit the bill perfectly. The writing team of Waverly Curtis created a fun and funny story full of people and the pets they love, with plenty of humor and a nice mystery to solve.
Not your hard-boiled story, Pepe the Chihuahua suffers from a touch of ‘small dog syndrome’, not unlike the human version of a Napoleonic complex. Pepe however, does recognize his limitations (usually) and is determined to find the answers to his questions. He discusses these questions with his partner Geri, who has her hands full dealing with the spunky little dog that is constantly trying to impress.
In this story, a woman has left her entire estate to her four cocker spaniels, and there is some kerfuffle about that bequest, with several people turning up dead and the future of the dogs in question. This was fast paced, funny and cleverly plotted story right up to the end.
Characters are drawn beautifully: Geri is a dedicated pet lover and her boyfriend Felix is as well – the two never want to travel without their pets. To Felix’s credit, he doesn’t think it’s strange that Geri often mentions conversations she has with her dogs, and while the two have some moments that are difficult, they easily resolve the issues without much strife. The dogs all have personalities that are strongly suggestive of breed types, and the story just moved quickly despite several breaks to wipe tears from the outrageous declarations from Pepe as he tries to gain Geri’s attention and impress her.
A clever and funny romance that will brighten a dark mood, this is a cozy mystery that keeps you smiling. The first I’ve read from this author duo, it won’t be the last.
