Publisher Description
From the author of The Hemlock Bay Series comes a new retelling of an old tale…
… Not every Beast is a prince charming at heart and not every Beauty is a maiden just waiting for love…
Calia Thorn has lived her entire life in a small town sheltered by the Cold King’s mountain. Working day and night to care for her younger siblings, complete her unending chores and please her selfish, lazy mother has left her with few dreams for her own future.
But then even those meager hopes are taken from her when the Cold King comes down from his mountain to demand a new servant. Ungraceful, unladylike, undesired and unwanted by even her own family, Calia is chosen to be sent to the palace.
The Cold King has lived for three hundred years under a curse imposed by his own father. With no hope of ever breaking it, he settles for keeping his heart frozen against any pain— or hope.
When his new servant arrives, she challenges him in ways no one ever has and sparks fly. But not every Beast is a prince charming at heart and not every beauty is a maiden just waiting for love.
Sometimes happily ever after isn’t so easy…
The Cold King is a dark retelling of Beauty and the Beast.
Customer Reviews
Decent story; needs editing
I really liked the idea of a retelling of Beauty and the Beast with a Cinderella twist. I thought the idea of how the King picked his hands in the castle was appropriate. I liked the idea behind how the king was cursed and what actions caused the king to be cursed.
The reason I gave it 3 stars is because of the grammar and spelling mistakes. There was no character development. The description of things were off or wrong. You had to believe that the main character was treated poorly simply because the author said it. The point of view would randomly change. The main character went from intrigue of the king to completely hating him for no reason. The main character is nothing like Belle or Cinderella; she’s a whiny brat. Lastly the ending was rushed.
High Expectations
I had a really hard time reconciling the protagonist’s constant crying and supposed strong spirit. The “redeeming” qualities in the Cold King were hardly enough to inspire loyalty, let alone love. I found the storyline quite weak; I was disappointed in all the grammatical errors; however, I pushed on to the end hoping the book would get better. Slavery, indentured servitude, Stockholm Syndrome, abuse... I was disappointed.
