Known as the fundamental law of Japan, as well as an act to replace Japan's previous militaristic and absolute monarchy system, the constitution was enacted on May 3, 1947 as the new constitution for postwar Japan. Currently termed as a rigid document, with no subsequent amendments since its adoption, the constitution was intended to usher in liberal democracy. 


Also known as the Postwar Constitution, it is most famous for the renunciation of the right to wage war in Article 9.
