Told by the man who lived it, The Cook Up is a riveting look inside the Baltimore drug trade as portrayed in the hit HBO series, The Wire.
The smartest kid on his block in East Baltimore, D. was certain he would escape the life of drugs, decadence, and violence that had surrounded him since birth. But when his brother Devin is shot-only days after D. receives notice that he's been accepted into Georgetown University-the plans for his life are exploded, and he takes up the mantel of his brother's crack empire. D. succeeds in cultivating the family business, but when he meets a woman unlike any he's known before, his priorities are once more put into question. Equally terrifying and hilarious, inspiring and heartbreaking, D.'s story offers a rare glimpse into the mentality of a person who has escaped many hells.

This book is filled with creativity. D Watkins does an amazing job on displaying his life and story. I truly love his writing style and craft. Truly attracts the reader from the beginning of the book. Best book I have ever read.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I read it in three days in the midst of a very busy schedule. I could not put it down. Being a hopeless romantic, I wish the memoir would have spoke more to the relationship of Soni & Dee. I wonder if they are still together? They're relationship spoke to me about the power of a good woman. Such a motivating story about self redemption.
Arm & hammer!!! Soft to hard the cook up is great
Amazing!!! Great insight on the plight of coming of age man in the city of Baltimore. The way the author articulates the struggle, how easy it is to get caught up, and how the different worlds coexist and can collide.. This would make a great tv show (a movie would be to short to show the complex characters). Can't wait to read his other book The Beast Side!!! Great read!!!
