A Masterpiece
The plot is simple enough, but the talk ranges widely and brilliantly. Taking place a couple of decades after Waterloo, it brings the modern reader into the minds and feellings of the French at that time. Balzac argues for religion, dictatorship, kindness, fidelity, even environmentalism with acute and detailed descriptions, a fine grasp of ancient history, and a deep romanticism. C’est un tour de force.
