The Courtesy Man

He tells you the exact minute you will die. Then he keeps his word.

A stranger stops Dana Okoro in the pharmacy where she works and tells her, politely, that she will die on Thursday at 9:14 p.m. He proves he has been inside her flat. He calls it a courtesy.

Dana does what anyone would do. She calls the police.

Seventy-two hours later she is dead, at 9:14 exactly, with two officers watching her window.

Detective Inspector Maren Doyle wrote the protocol that was supposed to keep Dana alive. Now a nurse, a court clerk and a judge have all been given a minute of their own, and every one of them dies inside the system built to save them. A hotel. An armoured convoy. A safe house nobody could possibly know about. He is always there first.

Because he is not hunting his victims. He is hunting the protection. Each death teaches him the next tier, and he is climbing, one protected person at a time, towards something he lost twenty-four years ago.

Then Maren discovers the truth that will cost her everything: sixty-three people were warned. Only the ones who asked for help are dead.

And the next minute he gives away belongs to her.

Don't ask for help.
