Too-familiar epic fantasy tropes and underbaked characterizations bring down Rollins's second Moonfall novel (after The Starless Crown). The plot surrounds series heroine Nix with an admirably diverse cast, including "a second-born prince, a broken knight, a recalcitrant thief, a figure sculpted of flowing bronze," all seeking to avert moonfall, or the world's destruction, and Rollins tantalizingly teases what to expect in a prologue announcing a "story of innocence lost, of trust betrayed, of hope banished," which "makes a mockery of what was written before." But what follows is utterly formulaic. Nyx, a student who has dedicated herself to averting the prophesized disaster, is alarmed to find a bomb on her questing vessel, the Sparrowhawk, evidence of a sabotaging traitor. Other dangers, from humans and monstrous beasts alike, pop up regularly. Sometimes-weak prose ("While she might not have been born of womb and blood, she was as much a woman as any other—only more so") doesn't help. Only diehard fans of the previous installment need bother with this one.

Ugh… some of author’s choices…
Have made it to the second book of this series. Lots of cliff hangers, good use of intrigue, some appreciable characters…
…but Dear Lord, what is with the BATS? 70% of this book is the main character singing to the bats, cuddling with the bats, worrying about the bats, deeply deeply heartfelt bonding with the bats, and sometimes resurrecting the bats with-her-singing because she has bonded with them so deeply that she just can’t cuddle them enough during their normal lifespan. Bats as main characters, bats as McGuffins for the quest, bats as Demi-gods, giant bat-hive minds, bats that require much cuddling and ear-petting, and that can somehow scamper adorably on their giant bat-appendages…
This is a story with lots and lots and scads of bats, and a super-powerful-but-virginal main character who loves her bats to a degree that seems borderline incestuous.
Just ugh.

Rollins Sigma series is an action packed combination of science fiction, fantasy, mystery and special forces. However his Moonfall series elevates his story-telling to a new level. These books are epic in scope with multiple interweaving plot lines, a great and broad cast of characters, fantastical creatures, empires, struggles for power and ultimately a quest to save the world. To top it off the reader enjoys Rollins signature page turning non-stop action with twists and turns aplenty. It’s a great read- his best work yet.
