The Creaking Wheels

Can one truly return home, or does home change with us?

In The Creaking Wheels, Jemima Fairfax stands at the crossroads of past and future, grappling with the demands of an Amish community bound by tradition and the echoes of a life beyond its borders. Her journey unfolds within the quiet rhythm of the Fairfax Greenhouse, a place where neglected heirloom seeds and forgotten promises intertwine.

Confronted by Obadiah Winslow's push for stricter Ordnung, Jemima must navigate the complex web of communal pressures and personal desires. Her return is marked by a community meeting that could jeopardize the Horse Sale—a vital event for both social and economic survival. As Jemima faces the decision to support or challenge the proposed changes, her every choice becomes a test of faith and allegiance.

As whispers of past associations with the English world threaten her credibility, Jemima finds solace in Nathaniel Stone, a figure from her past whose presence stirs both hope and uncertainty. Secrets unearthed from her father's letters hint at deeper connections, demanding Jemima confront not only her own doubts but the very heart of the land dispute embroiling her family.

Amidst the tension of a community divided, Jemima discovers unexpected allies in Miriam Fisher and Susanna Beiler, whose quiet support fuels her resolve. Together, they stand against Obadiah's influence, challenging the unyielding traditions that bind them.

From the fragile strength of the greenhouse, where the creaking wheels of tradition and change turn, Jemima steps into a storm—both literal and figurative—at the pivotal Horse Sale. Her symbolic gesture, setting an empty chair at the family table, calls for the community to confront their shared accountability.

The Creaking Wheels is a tale of steadfast devotion and the courage to forge one's path in a world where faith is tested by tradition. In this second installment of the "Returning to The Fold" series, Jemima's journey resonates with returning and new readers alike, inviting them to a world where challenges are as enduring as the beliefs that guide them.
