The Crownless Road

Travelers are disappearing along the King’s Road.

No bodies are found. No ransom demands arrive. No witnesses come forward. One by one, merchants, couriers, and nobles vanish between settlements, until fear begins accomplishing what no decree ever could—the road itself is slowly abandoned.

Sir Alaric of Wrenmere is sent to discover why.

At first, the disappearances appear unrelated, scattered across miles of countryside with no common place, victim, or method. But Alaric soon notices something more troubling. Those who vanish are not ordinary travelers. Each carries something important: a letter, a contract, a legal record, knowledge of a meeting or negotiation.

Someone is not simply watching the road.

Someone is listening to it.

Following a trail through inns, roadside villages, forgotten ledgers, and whispered conversations, Alaric encounters the name Edwin Crane—a quiet traveler seemingly known everywhere and understood by no one. The deeper Alaric searches, the more the mystery shifts from missing men to the information they carried, and to the unseen hands deciding which messages are allowed to reach their destination.

What began as an investigation into disappearances becomes a far more unsettling question:

How much power belongs to the person who decides what others are permitted to know?

The Crownless Road is the third book in The Alaric Investigations, a historical mystery series of buried motives, quiet conspiracies, and a former knight whose search for truth increasingly leads him beyond individual crimes and into the forces shaping the kingdom around him.
