Publisher Description

The Mercenary Librarians and the Silver Devils are back in The Devil You Know, the next installment of USA Today and New York Times bestselling author Kit Rocha’s post-apocalyptic action/romance, with hints of Orphan Black and the Avengers

Maya has had a price on her head from the day she escaped the TechCorps. Genetically engineered for genius and trained for revolution, there’s only one thing she can’t do—forget.

Gray has finally broken free of the Protectorate, but he can’t escape the time bomb in his head. His body is rejecting his modifications, and his months are numbered.

When Maya’s team uncovers an operation trading in genetically enhanced children, she’ll do anything to stop them. Even risk falling back into the hands of the TechCorps.

And Gray has found a purpose for his final days: keeping Maya safe.

The Devil You Know

An okay read. Starts getting recap syndrome like a lot of series. The librarian aspect is what makes this series’ concept unique but continues to fall to the wayside. The most disappointing part was how despite the pervasiveness of corporate tyranny and the depths of its ramifications being a huge part of the story’s world building, the authors fail to even scratch the surface of the consequences of generative AI when they decided to dip their toes in with Maya’s GenAI pop.

There’s so much to pull from between the environmental impact of the data centers it requires (the power required to run them and the water required to cool them), the economic consequences on impacted workers (displacement, lowered wages, loss of collective bargaining power, further funneling of wealth away from people and into tech monopolies), and censorship (these tools are run and maintained by corporations who therefore have control over their programming and datasets and thus their outputs).

It is so much more than “GenAI music is soulless but still has uses”. Humans have been making soulless music since music existed, no GenAI needed. Half the series’ premise is supposed to be about librarians, and yet the impact of AI books aren’t mentioned once in the entire series (impossible pattern books, mistranslated engineering and safety manuals, misinformation etc).

On a more nitpicky note, if the problem is background noise, Rowan is better off trying to record in a closet full of clothes, not the giant open space of a warehouse, which would result in a lot of other additional yet unlisted issues.
