Publisher Description

Hell never forgets a debt. Neither does the ground.

In September 1865, Isaiah Bell has been free for eleven days when soldiers march his family into a raw red hollow above Natchez, Mississippi. They are told to wait for wagons that will come Monday. The wagons never come. In the bowl, freedom is counted in graves instead of names. Smallpox, fever and hunger move through the camp. A flood opens the earth and unearths the dead. The army and the town have no reason to count them.

Isaiah carries a cracked green ledger out of a cooper's shop and crosses out its headings for debts. Where it said Received, he writes Buried, and where it said Paid, he writes Names. He swears to carry every name forward, "as a clerk carries a debt, until someone paid it." He keeps his oath through burial details, the death of his daughter Delia and a hidden tin of the army's own lists. He is helped by a boy who learns to write by recording the dead, and by a seamstress named Hester Bell who knows everything that happens in the camp. A quartermaster lieutenant has watched the camp die for months. He confesses in the margin of an official report and hides the truth in pencil on a survey map.

A hundred and sixty years later, historian Rene Carter finds the ledger under a sewing chest in a leaning house on Cemetery Road. Scholars say the toll was a few thousand, and the town's memory says twenty thousand. Rene refuses both numbers. Working with Odessa Pruitt, a descendant of the Bell family, with the groundskeeper who has kept a back gate unlocked for thirty-one years, and with an archivist, she follows the paper trail. It leads to a misfiled report, an erased line on an 1866 map and a field of unmarked graves just past the cemetery fence. A second ledger of the living, an official hearing and a ground-penetrating radar survey finally force the question of whose suffering is legible enough to be recorded.

The Devil's Ledger moves between the mud of 1865 and the manicured overlook of today. It is a haunting, meticulously grounded novel about the people history refused to count, and about the few who wrote their names down anyway.
