Abercrombie leavens the violence with light banter ("Whoever would've thought, a few months ago, when he was diligently reviewing the monastery's accounts, that slathered with gore would be a phrase he routinely employed?") and touches of sweet sapphic romance. Fans will come for the wicked swordplay and stay for the growing bonds between the eclectic cast.

A fun and campy read
The humor wasn’t for me — though it did get a chuckle out of me a handful of times. I found some of the scenes and dialogue repetitive (take a shot each time Alex said “Oh no”). The author particularly liked to have characters parrot each other, which got old fast. If we took out the sexual content and cursing, this could easily pass as a YA novel. The monologue/dialogue was a bit cartoonish at times, it reminded me of how Disney Chanel TV show characters talk. The characters all felt similar; especially since they all had the same humor/same jokes. Their characterization was too archetypal, and they all felt flat. The plot and villains were also fairly uninspired and elementary. I stuck with it because it was fun despite it all. The plot was fast-paced, and action packed. I was rarely bored, save for the last fifth of the book, which then quickly picked back up.
Pleasantly surprised
Not what I expected, but a pilgrimage of misfits not to be missed.
