On July 11 of 2010, author Mary Howard’s only son, twenty-two-year-old Johnny Ross Jr., was the victim of a robbery. A stranger approached him and shot him six times at close range, twice in the face. Somehow, Johnny survived the initial shooting and was transported to a hospital via life flight.
