I'd love to live in the Liaden universe if I could be a pilot or trader....
The Liaden universe is really wonderful; there is a bit of magic, some interesting tech (not too often that a key character is a math teacher), great character and culture development, and a bit of romance here and there. My overall favorite story (Scout's Progress) is in this volume, and so it is a good place to start. If you're not already a fan, you may want to save Er Thom's story until later, it's not a great introduction to the universe in my opinion.
