Julie is pregnant at forty-six and not sure she can bear to be a mother again. Her husband Charlie's affair with his best friend Wilson is over, and he wants another child more than anything. Wilson is in love with Dol, a transsexual who can't afford the transition that would make his body make sense – although the doctors visiting from Atlanta might change that. The Drifts is dexterously told, a cacophony of four affecting voices melding into one exquisite chord.
