I can see her through the glass door. She’s smaller in real life than I expected. She looks the exact opposite of the type of woman that might murder her husband.
Everyone’s heard of Simone Fischer. The young mother accused of killing her husband in cold blood, one sunny afternoon, while their son played in the room next door.
So when journalist Esme secures an exclusive interview with her it feels like the opportunity of a lifetime. Simone has remained silent since her husband’s death but after a decade in prison, she is willing to talk to Esme. And Esme, recently freed from her own toxic marriage, is confident she can get Simone to open up.
At their first meeting, when Esme sees Simone sitting across the table from her in jeans and a lemon tunic top, she is stuck by her ordinariness. Then Simone begins to tell her story of an abusive relationship where she was a prisoner in her own home, and Esme decides that the truth needs to come out.
But not everyone is pleased that Esme is telling Simone’s story. And when Esme’s beloved sister is left for dead in a nearby wood, Esme’s life begins to unravel. Forced to question what Simone has told her, she can’t help but wonder if murder was the only way out of Simone’s marriage. Why has it taken Simone so long to tell the world the truth? And will the consequences be devastating for Esme?

APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Any psychological thriller fan will be prepared for all sorts of wild and shocking twists. Here, K.L. Slater does her best to raise the ante. She introduces us to Simone Fischer, a young mother convicted of killing her husband one afternoon with their son next door, and Esme Fox, a journalist and podcaster determined to understand exactly what happened that fateful day. Presenting the story as a mix of prose and podcast transcription adds a real energy and tension to the storytelling—especially as Simone begins to confide in Esme and reveal the extraordinary abuse she suffered. The tale darkens further when Esme’s sister is attacked and left in a forest and she’s left to question Simone’s version of events and whether sinister forces are determined for her story to be kept quiet. This is all before one cracking twist that left us reeling for days…
KL Slater has done it again. She just proved once again why she is The Queen Of Suspense. I have read so many of her books over the years but this one tops the cake. This book had it all. I’m so happy I read it but so sad that it ended. I’m definitely looking forward to her next book.
Now let’s talk about the book. There was a specific quote from the book that really summed up the whole book for me. That quote was, “There was nothing like the love of a mother”. This was a reoccurring theme during the whole book and really rings true for all of us mothers out there. Every single one of us would do anything for our child no matter what the cost it to us. Just remember this while reading this book. On to the characters. My favorite was Esme as she was so strong and fierce. She was the type of person that if I knew her in real life I would totally look up to her. She fought for the truth and wouldn’t stop at nothing until she got it. Next up is the plot. I loved how this book centered around finding justice for a woman convicted of killing her abusive spouse. This is a topic that really hits home for me and something as a society should talk more about. There is so much more than physical abuse as this book shows. There is also mental abuse which can be just as damaging maybe even more so than physical. Now to my favorite part of the book, the ending. Omg, it was a dinger. My mouth stayed open the whole time in complete utter shock. I couldn’t believe what I was reading and how this book was ending. It definitely surprised me which is so hard to do. I loved it.
Between the plot, characters and all the twists in this book it made it an easy and fast read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
