Equivalent to Sundance film bottled into a kids book.
Having read hundreds of children's books to my two young boys, The Fantastic Travels of Maxine Machine is a remarkable book and stands out on so many levels. My boys generally like books featuring boy characters. So for my boys to love the adventures of a little girl says a lot.
The story is fun, exciting, adventurous, beautifully illustrated and written and just an all around great read.
As someone who takes great pride in producing well-told stories on the silver screen, what Yasmin Waring has accomplished with her rhyme and story is the equivalent of a Sundance film bottled into a beautifully crafted children's book.
Love the Artistry
As a visual artist, the first thing I noticed was the artwork. I love the artwork! It is so rhythmic which works well with the writing. The writing is awesome. Poetry is perfect for children. It keeps their attention and when done right, it can be so memorable. The last thing I'd like to add is, I wish there were more childrens books for little Black girls when I was growing up. The author is on to something and I hope she continues in that direction.
