Publisher Description

The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien's three-volume epic, is set in the imaginary world of Middle-earth - home to many strange beings, and most notably hobbits, a peace-loving "little people," cheerful and shy. Since its original British publication in 1954-55, the saga has entranced readers of all ages. It is at once a classic myth and a modern fairy tale. Critic Michael Straight has hailed it as one of the "very few works of genius in recent literature." Middle-earth is a world receptive to poets, scholars, children, and all other people of good will. Donald Barr has described it as "a scrubbed morning world, and a ringing nightmare world...especially sunlit, and shadowed by perils very fundamental, of a peculiarly uncompounded darkness." The story of ths world is one of high and heroic adventure. Barr compared it to Beowulf, C.S. Lewis to Orlando Furioso, W.H. Auden to The Thirty-nine Steps. In fact the saga is sui generis - a triumph of imagination which springs to life within its own framework and on its own terms.

Maps quality is appalling

Great book, but the image quality of the maps is terrible. I cannot believe so little effort was put into this ebook. The publisher needs to rescan the maps and update the image quality.

Where's the added value

I'm familiar with the Tolkien watercolored pencil drawing which inspired the book cover (I'd rather have the pencil drawing) this clean black modernist cover is conflict with the spirit of these books. I could think of so many ways to add value to an ebook version of Lord of the Rings: rich illustrations (I still prefer the first editions I read with cover art by Tolkien himself), interactive maps, perhaps (but only if done well) audio of elfish songs but definitely and audio pronunciation dictionary. Imagine having tools to help explore the various languages, or consolidating the genealogies. This edition has none of that, it is simply the text of the book in its most expensive digital format (the identical Kindle version is less expensive but still expensive) -- heck, this is a dollar more than buying a new paperback version. I don't begrudge the Tolkien estate their profits but this smells of greedy distributors -- I'm waiting for someone to add some value for the profits they intend to reap.

Great book but ripoff

iBooks used to offer a deal to get all 3 books for one low price. I was going to buy this after I finished reading some other stuff but it's gone. Now I would have to pay $10 for each book. I might get them but it seems like I ripoff compared to the old deal
