In 1934 Texas, after four years of drought, the Martinelli farm is no longer thriving, but Elsa is attached to the land and her in-laws, and she works tirelessly and cares for her children, 12-year-old Loreda and seven-year-old Anthony. Her husband, Rafe, has become distant and something of a hard drinker, and after he abandons them, Elsa reluctantly leaves with her children for California with the promise of steady work. Good, but a little expected
The book was good, but not as good as The Nightingale. I felt that the writing was a little formulaic and some of the dialogue didn’t feel sincere. It had heartbreaking moments, but I didn’t feel as much anguish with this book compared to Hannah’s other books.
Beautifully written story but no fairytale ending
I have heard such wonderful things about the author and my book club decided we’d tackle this thick tome. The story of this woman’s life is incredibly compelling and paints a bleak picture of life for women in the Great Depression and into the Dust Bowl. As a native Texan who drives through this tiny town every other year (headed to Colorado), I was intrigued to read about the town during its time of prosperity. But the life of a woman who’s always been told she’s unlovable is a tough road. I still encourage you to dive in & swim to the finish, if only to see what those days required of a brave woman.
Awesomeness
I LOVED this book. It made me laugh, thinking of motherhood. And also made cry thinking of people I have lost. Great read!!! Highly recommend
