History is littered with the bones of organizations killed by change, either because they let events run over them, or because they misjudged what was happening to them. When you look closely at those organizations that have changed successfully, it is often clear that somewhere, somehow, somebody did their homework. That’s the subject of this book: how to do your homework in a way that both motivates and informs rational organizational change. Although I address my remarks mainly to team leaders, you will find much of value if you are a member of a study team, someone who is presented with a study and wants to see what should go into a successful one, or just an ordinary soul who wants to get to the bottom of some matter or another.
