Publisher Description
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson, creator of the smash-hit science fiction and fantasy series Skyward, The Stormlight Archive, and Mistborn.
A man awakens in a clearing in what appears to be medieval England with no memory of who he is, where he came from, or why he is there. Chased by a group from his own time, his sole hope for survival lies in regaining his missing memories, making allies among the locals, and perhaps even trusting in their superstitious boasts. His only help from the “real world” should have been a guidebook entitled The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, except his copy exploded during transit. The few fragments he managed to save provide clues to his situation, but can he figure them out in time to survive?
Note from Brandon in March 2022:
Sometimes an idea just won’t let go of you for years. The initial seed of this novel was the title that eventually turned into The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England. At first there was no story to go with that title, but I wrote it down and kept coming back to it, wondering what that book could possibly be about. Something else I thought about off and on for years was the classic concept of a man waking up in another time and another place, with no idea how he got there. It was when those two ideas came together, and I placed a book with that title into that man’s hands, that this novel was born. I hope you’ll have as much fun with it as I did!

Unexpectedly Fun!
What a fun divergence from the usual Sanderson writing! This book is funny, relatively light and so absurd that I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m a HUGE fan of the author ever since he was brought on to complete the Wheel of Time, the epic high fantasy that made surviving high school possible for me and The Frugal Wizard is no exception. At first I was thrown off by the levity and inclusion of modern aspects, once I allowed myself to get into the LARGE difference in the storyline (compared to his other writings) I got some laughs, some cringes, and other less serious lighter emotional boosts. I recommend approaching this book with an open mind and expecting the unexpected—as always the writing is solid, and includes an actual AND internal journey with the main character. As a lifelong fan of fantasy The Frugal Wizard was a pleasant and unusual read. My only negative feedback relates to some parts of the story utilizing unnecessarily long excerpts from the “handbook” (rafo people!). The shorter ones are funny but, well, we know Brandon likes to do the high fantasy thing and provide details…it didn’t feel quite on par at points. Overall: worth the read!
Great Brandon Sanderson title
This was a great addition to Brandon’s library of books. I am looking forward to secret projects 3 and 4.
Sanderson Don’t Miss
A fun easy read to add to the Sanderson Catalog. Playful first person mystery with the patented Sanderson build up at the end.
