For Jim and Della the excitement of Christmas Eve is overshadowed by their financial hardship. Della has saved every penny she can and only has a $1.87 to show for it. Her long beautiful hair, the pride and joy of her husband Jim, could be sold to the wigmaker, but what would Jim say? Would Jim still think she is beautiful without her flowing locks of thick hair? But what sort of gift can she buy for Jim with only one dollar and eighty-seven cents?
Jim has one possession he is proud of, a shiny gold watch; a watch passed down from his grandfather to his father – and now to him. If he sold it he could afford something special for Della, but can he bring himself to sell such a valuable family heirloom?
Written in 1906 by the master of the short story, O. Henry captures the true meaning of Christmas like few storytellers ever have. This unabridged edition featuring custom art and optional voice over, will transport you to that snowy day in December over a century ago. So grab a warm blanket, a cup of hot cocoa, and discover this classic again with someone you love.

O. Henry's classic tale of Della and Jim, the struggling newlyweds so anxious to give each other a Christmas gift that each sells the one thing the other holds most dear, receives an oddly lifeless treatment here. Heyer's meticulously detailed illustrations are pretty but stilted; the characters look like mannequins. The rueful Jim fares better than poor prematurely middle-aged Della, who at times looks more like his mother than his wife. Still, the story is as touching as ever, and neither time nor mediocre artwork can dim its glory. All ages.
