Publisher Description
The Pulitzer Prize–winning, New York Times–bestselling novel about a peasant farmer and his family in early twentieth-century China.
The Good Earth is Buck’s classic story of Wang Lung, a Chinese peasant farmer, and his wife, O-lan, a former slave. With luck and hard work, the couple’s fortunes improve over the years: They have sons, and save steadily until one day they can afford to buy property in the House of Wang—the very house in which O-lan used to work. But success brings with it a new set of problems. Wang soon finds himself the target of jealousy, and as good harvests come and go, so does the social order. Will Wang’s family cherish the estate after he’s gone? And can his material success, the bedrock of his life, guarantee anything about his soul? Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the William Dean Howells Award, The Good Earth was an Oprah’s Book Club choice in 2004. A readers’ favorite for generations, this powerful and beautifully written fable resonates with universal themes of hope and family unity. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Pearl S. Buck including rare images from the author’s estate.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
First published in 1931, Pearl S. Buck’s story of a Chinese peasant farmer and his family remains a moving, relatable story. As the industrial revolution sweeps through early 20th-century China, the Lung family experience shifting fortunes as they suffer through life’s hardships and rejoice in every day’s small successes. An American Christian missionary who spent years in East Asia, Buck wrote The Good Earth as a portrait of daily life in China at a time when few Americans had insight into what the country was like. It’s a cautionary tale against wealth and idleness, a celebration of nature’s majesty, and most importantly, a kind and humane look at family ties in the face of upheaval.

The Good Earth
This novel is easy to read and very entertaining and makes you think about life's twists and turns. The characters come alive each with its own personality. I don't usually read sequence novels but I do plan to read these two.
Amazing
I honestly hate reading. I actually said it. I do. I read this for school because I absolutely had to, and I'll be the first to say- this is an amazing book. Amazing enough for a non-reader to pick up other books and actually WANT to read. This is the book that got me into reading books, not Harry Potter, not Hunger Games- this book. Read it.
The Good Earth
My very favorite book ever. I thank my 10th grade teacher for making me read it. Have read it three more times (every 10 years or so) and loved it for different reasons every time. Descriptions are so rich. Anyone can identify with the story of the hardworking Wang and Olan and the hardships they endure along with the rewards they reap and the sense of entitlement of their offspring. Amazing!
