Cursed Lovers & Magic

I don’t know if I should give ‘The Hanging Night’ 5 stars or 1.
The first thing you need to know, is that the ending is not (entirely) happy. I have that hollow feeling in my stomach but I will be thinking about this book for a long time.
The second thing, is that it’s the first book in a new series, so the first thing may be moot.
All I can say is, when is the next book coming out?
I admit, when I first started this book, I wondered if it was for me. It started out a little slow but I was intrigued. The writing is beautiful. The words just flow and the prose, though modern, often reads like an old time poem. The characters are quirky and lovable but the circumstances are dismal.
Suddenly, the entire ambience of the story shifts and the desire to know the outcome, dominates.
This is not a simple read. I reread several paragraphs a few times throughout the book. I wanted to squeeze out every intention in the words. Was this a simple story being told or did each chapter have hidden meaning mingled within? Impending doom is the enduring theme but glimpses of optimism give the impression that it might go in an entirely different direction.
Told from several points of view, the whole story eventually comes together but not exactly as I’d hoped. My question now is, will the next book continue the story of enduring love or is this the end?
Deep but thought provoking, ‘The Hanging Night’ is a book worth the read. Definitely 5 stars.
