Publisher Description

On a cold November morning, a jogger runs through the woods in the peaceful Quebec village of Three Pines. On his run, he finds a dead man hanging from a tree. The dead man had been a guest at the local Inn and Spa. He might have been looking for peace and quiet, but something else found him. Something horrible. Did the man take his own life? Or was he murdered? Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is called to the crime scene. As Gamache follows the trail of clues, he opens a door into the past. And he learns the true reason why the man came to Three Pines. This novella is a quick and easy read for people on the go.

The Hangman

This is a well-written SHORT story. The price is WAY too high for less than 100 pages.

The Hangman

This was a short story and not remotely up to Penny's past books. It's appropriate for 6th grade thru 9th, and not a novella in length.

Purposely written at an elementary school level

I just want to share Louise Penny’s clarification of what this novella is. It’s purposely written at an elementary school level for adults who are improving their literacy skills. It’s part of a charitable effort called GoodReads Canada to help adult learners by as well as raise money for literacy. She said she has learned that books produced as part of this effort are also good for English language learners and those who may need to relearn some reading skills after a stroke. It does not necessarily fit into the overall story arc of the regular novels. I haven’t read it; I just wanted to shed light on the reasons behind the language and price. I’m giving 5 stars to laud her participation in the program.
