Whimsical
I must admit, I skimmed through a good number of pages that I felt didn't add to the story. But overall, I throughly enjoyed this.
Okay!
It doesn’t have the same charm for me as Parnassus on Wheels, but it is a fun caper. The dialogue is snappy, and the characters comfortingly predictable for an easy, light read.
I’m not sure where that other reviewer read about a “mistrust of blacks,” unless they misspelled Germans, which the book does in fact play into, as it takes place just following the armistice.
There are a lot of references to contemporary figures in the book who have been all but lost to popular memory; good thing an e-books have a quick look up function. I imagine Mifflin would like a book about books where you get to learn about those books as you’re reading this book.
Great classic pipe smoking novel
Loved the language, the references to pipe smoking culture, the distrust of blacks, yet some of the dialogue by one of the main characters could really drag on and on, a few times I found myself skimming over parts of Rogers pome lust. All and all a classic book and a must read.
