The Haunted Hotel is remarkablly well-paced, compelling, and interesting as it unravels layer upon layer of mystery to reveal, in the end, an allegory of life itself. Among the best mystery and horror tales I’ve read, it drew me through in one sitting. Surprisingly modern in its prose, blunt and witty, insightful and wise, this novella is well worth your time. I could not put this material down. As with other works of Wilkie Collins, I was mesmerized.
